2019 Great Taste Awards Chocolate Winners Collection
Discover delicious dark, milk and flavoured chocolate in our 2019 Great Taste Awards Collection.
These bars really are the best of the best. They’ve all won stars in the 2019 Great Taste Awards. We’ve curated a collection of bars that truly represent the finest that the world of small batch, artisan chocolate has to offer.
The Great Taste Awards has been important to the growth of the craft chocolate movement within the UK. It has consistently supported small batch makers, both from the UK and abroad. Recognition by the Great Taste Awards means a great deal to these makers who are trying to get a foothold in the fine food scene in the UK.
Inside we’ve included four winners that we feel showcase the innovations, tastes and styles that can be found in craft chocolate today.
First is a chocolate bar crafted by Standout Chocolate. Standout has sourced the beans for this bar from GoGround Cocoa – a supplier of Indian cacao. GoGround Cocoa work directly with the farmers, ensuring quality harvesting and post-harvest practices, but foremost they encourage the growing of fine-flavour cacao in India.
India is a country that rarely comes to mind when one thinks of chocolate, but we are loving the profile boost in fine-flavour cacao growing within India. On taste, this dark chocolate bursts with rich sultana and dried fruit notes, with quite the “Madagascan” quality within the bar. The melt and texture is smooth, with a nutty finish.
Next up we’ve Duffy’s Juno 70% bar. This dark chocolate is a complex mix of fresh hay, mellow red fruit and a roast chestnut aftertaste. The Chuno cacao bean strain for this bar grows south of the Lake Managua in Nicaragua.
Island’s Chocolate is a combination of passion, cricket and Vincentian cocoa. After a semi-professional cricketing career, Wilf embarked on a new vision – to ‘Think Beyond the Bar’. He wanted to pay more attention to “ those who farm the cocoa, the passionate chocolate making team, the culture of the island and the Caribbean as a whole.” He wanted people to feel a connection between Islands Chocolate and the Caribbean.
Finally we’ve a dark chocolate bar from American maker Dick Taylor. This 72% dark chocolate bar immediately delivers a wave of roasted and green flavours, followed by slightly fruity notes with particular hints of citrus. We also detected some nuanced floral and dried fruit notes, creating a rounded and flavoursome tasting experience.
This box is a wonderful way to share the spectacular flavours of single estate chocolate with friends and family.
