TASTING NOTES

We were so excited to try Åkesson’s first dark milk chocolate bar and boy does it not disappoint. The magnificent combination of fruity and woody flavours typical of Åkesson’s Brazilian chocolate is lifted beautifully by the sweetness of the milk. A truly decadent bar, this is one where you’ll have to keep coming back for more.

ABOUT THE MAKER

Bertil Åkesson is one of the true heroes of the bean-to-bar market. He has pioneered the direct sale of his single-estate beans to over 300 chocolate makers all over the world and has crafted his own range of award-winning bars. Born to a Swedish diplomat father and a French mother, Bertil grew up in Madagascar, where his family settled in the 1970s. His father established a number of cocoa and spice plantations on the island, which Bertil has since expanded.

In April 2009, Bertil Åkesson and his Brazilian partner, Dr. Angelo Calmon de Sa, purchased the Fazenda Sempre Firme estate in Bahia, Brazil. Known as “paraíso”, or “paradise”, to the locals, this 120-hectare cocoa plantation lies in the middle of the Mata Atlantica, the wild forest in southern Brazil famed for its extraordinary biodiversity. Parasinho, the traditional variety of cocoa grown there, gives all of Åkesson’s Brazilian chocolate a deep earthy quality enriched with fruity and woody notes.

  1. Chris E.

Too milky and sweet for me. It had an oily feel to it.

  2. JANG HYEOP K.

It melts gently from the edge.
rich berry flavor and a little bit of cheese flavor.
It’s not enough to be delicate, but it has a complex flavor and no empty taste.

  3. Elvire R.

Very smooth but not a dark milk, tasted more like a white milk chocolate and not enough flavour for my preference.

  4. Zoe D.

    (Lot 182/20)

A slightly oily melt which became silky and cooling over time. The flavour reminded me of the milk chocolate produced by a chocolate factory that I visited in my youth. Distinct from a mass-market chocolate but I’ve tried other bars which were far superior to this one in all respects(Qantu “Oh La Vache!).

Having said this, my family(who are not regular consumers of craft chocolate) really enjoyed it and rated it above mass-market chocolate.

  5. jane H.

Lovely smooth texture, not enough depth of flavour for my liking.

  6. NC MCDONNELL

The best milk chocolate ever. Rich, complex flavours.

  7. Victoria F.

One of the best milk chocolates I’ve tried in a long time. Very rich and gorgeously creamy, a truly decadent tasting bar!
