Wrapped in Nordic mittens, Chocokoo is Estonia’s first bean to bar chocolate maker.
After Kristel Lankots wanted to radically change her life’s direction to do something she really loved and something that she could call her own, it meant moving away from her financial responsibility in the construction industry and into the world of chocolate-making. Equipped with a degree in economics and business management, Kristel founded Chocokoo with the aspiration to create something tangible from her hard work.
The Maleku cacao grows in Upala in the Northern region of Costa Rica, on small plots of land owned by individual farmers. Costa Rica, although a paradise land rich in coffee and fruit, still has its cacao in the midst of emerging as a valuable crop. For many years, any growing of cacao had been abandoned, namely in favour of growing bananas. But now cacao in Costa Rica has made a greatly admired comeback, with the farmers able to make a good living from selling their fine flavour beans.
Dark rye sourdough studs this 70% Costa Rican chocolate, expressing the uniting of Estonian culture and Costa Rica’s new found love for growing cacao. The bar itself was the official chocolate of Estonian presidency of the EU in 2017.
The rye sourdough adds crunches and a toasted flavour, whilst elevating the honey and apricot notes of the Costa Rican cacao and balancing its citrus tang.
