Low Sugar Chocolate Collection
A collection of four fantastic dark bars that are low in sugar but don’t compromise on taste. Each is at least 80% cocoa, but with a rich, complex flavour and almost none of the bitterness you might expect.
First from Menakao is an intense 100% Madagascan dark chocolate. The bar has no sugar in it atall and is made with nothing but cacao. Unwrap the chocolate and you are instantly hit by a strong fruity aroma. Delicious and inviting as this may be, don’t be fooled into breaking off a great chunk as the chocolate has a serious intensity.
The initial berries have a citrus edge, leading to a powerful and sharp finish. A roasted note is mixed with the fruits, which reminds us a little of strong filter coffee. The almost sherbet – like astringency, gives a mouthwatering quality as the chocolate fills your mouth with strong flavours.
Next we bring you Le 100% from french maker Pralus. As the “Le 100%” name implies, this is a 100% cocoa solids chocolate, containing nothing but cocoa mass and a little extra cocoa butter. But we think it’s a great way to show off the natural intensity and flavours present in cocoa.
Thirdly is a bar from Chocolat Madagascar, the Domaine de Mava 85%. This could be a great way to compare two chocolates made in Madagascar using Madagascan cacao.
MAVA plantation is located in north west Madagascar, nestling in the Sambirano valley and foothills of the Tsaratanana Massif offering unique terroir cacao. With the very first harvest, the Mava bar won silver at the AOC awards and the MAVA cocoa is a finalist at the Cocoa of Excellence 2017 awards.
This 85% dark chocolate has a pleasant and well-balanced acidity. Expect flavours of plums, damsons and forest fruit.
Finally is a bar from Austrian maker Zotter. This high cocoa % bar bears Zotter’s signature smooth texture, and has little to no bitterness. There is a slight astringent mouthfeel, which puckers the mouth making this chocolate seem very complex and sophisticated.
This is the box for you if you’re looking to dial up the intensity, but aren’t quite ready for 100% Cacao just yet.
