Madécasse’s founders, Brett Beach and Tim McCollum, met as Peace Corps volunteers in Madagascar. Struck by the fact that while over 65% of the world’s cocoa is grown in Africa, less than 1% of chocolate is made there, they set about producing chocolate on the island to help the local economy. Partnering with local cocoa farmers and a factory in the capital Antananarivo, they produce chocolate that has around four times the benefit of Fair Trade.
This is an intense dark chocolate made with a substantial 80% cocoa solids. Look out for balsamic notes and a fruity edge, typical of Madagascan cocoa.

Having spent some time in Madegascar myself, I really want to support Madécasse. This bar has a strong fruitiness and intense cocoa flavour, rather astringent. I'm not a big fan of the coarse texture. It's a little too grainy once it melts for my liking.

We've been rating our bars on our regular deliveries for the past 6 months now, this bar scored a slightly disappointing 6/10. With some higher percentage bars the taste treads a fine tightrope between complexity and bitterness, which this bar struggles on. You can't eat much of it, and to be honest, you might not want to.

nice fruity citrus taste, intense chocolate which melts with a pleasant after taste

Very strong fruity tones - in particular orange and mango - which give a lovely sweetness to the chocolate. A bit too acerbic, I don't think I could have more than one piece at a time but if that means it will last longer that's not a problem. Texture a little coarse and slow to melt but releases such flavoursome notes with a grapefruit like aftertaste. Amazing when you think that it is just cocoa and sugar with nothing added to flavour it.
