Manoa – Breakfast Bar
Out of stock
This crunchy milk chocolate is the perfect way to start your day.
Manoa’s signature milk is liberally sprinkled with pieces of Hawaiian cocoa and coffee nibs. The base chocolate is classically sweet and milky with just a touch of coconut. The roasted nibs give the bar a distinctive texture as well as a nutty intensity. Coffee and cacao blend together to create a mocha note that doesn’t overpower.
Manoa was founded by Dylan Butterbaugh and Daniel O’Doherty. The pair use a variety of different locally sourced ingredients in their bars, which they craft in Kailua on Oahu island.
They buy the beans for their Hawaiian bars from local farmers in Hamakua, Waiahole, Maunawili and Haiku. Hawaii is the only American state where cacao is grown. Dylan and Daniel have also sourced their coffee locally. The coffee beans are grown in Waialua on the North Shore of Oahu and specially roasted by Kailua Town Coffee Roasters.

I like the way this is unashamedly called a ‘Breakfast Bar’. I’m not in the habit of eating a bar of chocolate for breakfast, but I know what they mean. The combination of dark milk, coffee and nibs gives this a nutty, crunchy, crumbly, chocolate muesli feel to it with an enjoyable depth of flavour. The bar is moulded with a Hawaiian design and nicely packaged. The wrapper explains that manoa means ‘solid, vast; depth’. It also gives a suggestion for pairing the chocolate with wine (Petite Sirah) and beer (Porters). Wine and beer for breakfast? Surely not..
