TASTING NOTES
This playful bar reverberates with floral bursts and whispers of tropical fruits, orange, and toffee. The inclusion of nibs adds an earthy dimension, finely ground so as to give a pleasingly subtle crunch and slightly different texture from the normally smooth Swiss chocolate of Original Beans.
ABOUT THE MAKER
Original Beans was founded in 2008 by Philipp Kauffmann, a former conservationist at the World Wildlife Fund and the United Nations, to be a regenerative chocolate making company that focuses on protecting farmers, the rainforest, and thousands of endangered species. Their One Bar : One Tree programme promises that a tree is planted every time an Original Beans bar is sold, which can be tracked on their website with a special code on the back of the packet.
THE BEANS
The cacao for this bar is grown in special village gardens on the edge of Udzungwa Mountain National Park, an important haven for Tanzania’s endangered elephants. Unfortunately, the elephants’ tendency to trample crops has resulted in a history of conflict between the Park’s cocoa growers and its elephants. Conservationists came up with a sweet solution: honeybees. Elephants avoid beehives (understandably!), so the Udzungwa farmers have set up beehives in the gardens’ fences. Now they produce their own honey and can live in harmony with their beautiful gentle giant neighbours.

Melt: bitty from nibs but actual chocolate is satin.
Flavour: tropical fruits such as mango and papaya. Fruity but not tangy. I didn’t get much flavour from the nibs but the crunch they provided was pleasant. The nibs were a good size and evenly distributed.

Lovely chocolate
Smooth and creamy with a subtle subdued orange hint as described but in no way acidic
Not too sweet- good!
Interesting crunch from the nibs

I have previously been a bit underwhelmed by Original Beans bars but this truly blew me away! It’s deliciously fruity with a very pleasant crunch from the crushed cacao nibs.
