TASTING NOTES
Original Beans’ first 100% bar, this intense dark Swiss chocolate has a perfectly smooth melt and a delicate floral sweetness, revealing a lightly perfumed profile of rose petals with a cut-grass sweetness. “100%” means no added sugar – it’s all cocoa solids and cocoa butter. The result is a deep chocolate experience with all the flavours of the bean.
ABOUT THE MAKER
Original Beans was founded in 2008 by Philipp Kauffmann, a former conservationist at the World Wildlife Fund and the United Nations, to be a regenerative chocolate making company that focuses on protecting farmers, the rainforest, and thousands of endangered species. Their One Bar : One Tree programme promises that a tree is planted every time an Original Beans bar is sold, which can be tracked on their website with a special code on the back of the packet.
THE BEANS
The beans for this bar come from the Cusco Valley in the Peruvian Andes, a stone’s throw from the ancient mountain-top city of Machu Picchu. Cusco Valley is home to the Chuncho bean, one of Peru’s rarest varietal of cocoa. Although many modern hybrids also use this name, Original Beans has gone back to the source, to find and preserve the purest strain of this ancient and precious cocoa bean. Grown in Peru and made in Switzerland, this chocolate is a dream for 100% lovers the world over.

For a 100% cocoa bar this is remarkable! My previous experience of 100% cocoa bars wasn’t very enjoyable, very bitter and it always hung around for a long time. But, I was intrigued by the previous reviews, and they didn’t disappoint! It only needs to be eaten in small doses… but very regularly (just like good whisky)!High recommended.

I don’t get so much fruity flavours here, in fact it actually reminds me a little of a Speyside whisky! Not one I could eat a lot of in one go, but that’s a good thing. Nice creamy texture to melt in the mouth (my preferred way to eat this one).

Very nice. Highly aromatic. Not only with floral notes but also fruitier raspberry and cherry notes. Very full with flavour whilst maintaining a good balance without the need for sugar.
It is powerful and causes slight irritation to my palate from the acidity so I’d suggest having small amounts at a time.

WONDERFUL!! A lovely bar, just the right thickness, nice and ‘clean’, sharp ‘snap’ to release a piece (!). The chocolate itself is just adorable…light, not at all bitter (‘real’ chocolate taste)..caramel-smoothness and just a hint of white frisky wine! Highly recommend PLUS I LOVE this company’s ethical stance….no guilt at all…EACH BAR YOU BUY PLANTS A TREE IN THE TROPICAL RAIN FOREST!! wow.. Do support Original Beans and ‘save the planet’. Enjoy.
