TASTING NOTES
Typical of all Original Beans bars made in Switzerland, this dark chocolate has an incredibly smooth melt full of deep flavour. The Mexican beans give the bar a delicate coconut base and expressive hints of tropical lychee – a unique combination fitting for Original Beans’ first venture into Mexican cocoa.
ABOUT THE MAKER
Original Beans was founded in 2008 by Philipp Kauffmann, a former conservationist at the World Wildlife Fund and the United Nations, to be a regenerative chocolate making company that focuses on protecting farmers, the rainforest, and thousands of endangered species. Their One Bar : One Tree programme promises that a tree is planted every time an Original Beans bar is sold, which can be tracked on their website with a special code on the back of the packet.
THE BEANS
The cacao for this bar is grown in the Selva Zoque forest in southern Mexico, an important habitat for much of Mexico’s biodiversity. It is also claimed to be the birthplace of chocolate, as people in the Selva Zoque have been harvesting and consuming cocoa for over 4,000 years. Original Beans’ partnership with the Zoque and Tzotzil people have allowed them to revive their age-old chocolate-making traditions and practice sustainable guardianship of their home forest.

This bar is great. Dark without ANY astringency. I get top notes of red wine. It did not take me on a complex flavor wave and yet it was very satisfying because it is so well balanced. A top note of red wine or grapes with a deep, dark chocolate that showcases the bean. Really impressed. I keep thinking about it and want to go get more. Ha!

Smooth, dark & fruity with just a hint of sweetness. One of my favourites.

The least interesting of the Original beans range

Smooth and fruity. Really nice and the company ethos heightened the whole experience to honouring the bean.
