Thanksgiving Craft Chocolate Gift Box: Celebrating American Makers
In this special thanksgiving gift box, we will be celebrating some of our brilliant American craft chocolate makers with a range of their milk and dark bars.
After 20 years as a highly successful criminal defence lawyer in Springfield, Missouri, Shawn Askinosie began creating chocolate. 11 years later, in 2016, Askinosie was listed as one of Forbes’ 25 Best Small Companies in America. In Tanzania, where his farmers have made up to 48% more money selling their cocoa beans to Shawn than any other company, not one had ever tasted chocolate before. According to both bean-grower and bar-lover, Askinosie chocolate is award-winningly delicious, including this 70% Ecuadorian bar with nibs.
Charlie Burke, founder and chocolate maker, started his chocolate journey in the 80’s, with the opening of a small chain of chocolate and confectionery shops in New England, USA. After opening the stores, Charlie wanted to fulfil yet another childhood dream of his: working in feature films. In 1995, Charlie auditioned for his very first film role. Having got the part, Charlie enrolled himself in film school; all the while continuing to manage and expand his small chain of chocolate shops. This milk chocolate and potato chips is unlike anything you will have tried before!
Todd Masonis and Cameron Ring are lifelong chocolate fans, but their journey into artisan chocolate took a detour in 2002 when they co-founded social networking site Plaxo. But their friends knew it was only a matter of time before they started a chocolate factory, and true to form, they opened their workshop in San Francisco’s Mission District in 2010. Their factory and café on Valencia Street is now a popular destination for locals and chocolate lovers from around the world.
When Dan and Jael Rattigan met at a wedding in 2003, the path to creating French Broad Chocolate was not on either of their minds. But after dropping out of graduate school, packing their lives into a 40-foot vegetable oil-powered school bus (converted by Dan), and moving south to Costa Rica to set up a Bread and Chocolate Cafe (no really!), they decided to return to North Carolina to pursue the chocolate dream. The business began out of their home kitchen, but demand quickly grew and in 2012, Dan and Jael opened French Broad Chocolate Factory & Tasting Room.
Tom and Monica were living in Los Angeles as a TV producer and real estate agent when they discovered the magic of craft chocolate. In their own words: “We first discovered craft chocolate in, of all places, a vintage furniture shop in Los Angeles. The incredible flavors we tasted in those bars completely changed how we thought about chocolate, and started us on our journey to become single origin chocolate makers”.
