James Hoffmann has been involved with the specialty coffee industry for more than 15 years. He was the 2007 World Barista Champion as well as 2006 & 2007 UK Barista Champion. He is the author of the critically acclaimed The World Atlas of Coffee. In his quest to make London famous for its good coffee, he co-founded Square Mile Coffee Roasters and has become a YouTube sensation.

In this tasting James will explain how he, along with Barry Smith and Rebecca Palmer, came up with the idea of the “Tasting Wave” that we now use — and the importance of “tasting fast and slow”. We’ll also use a range of other bars, from a salted egg and cereal bar from Singapore to a Colombian Dark bar crafted in Amsterdam, to run through some of the themes and adventures of James’ progress from running wild in Northern England as a schoolboy to croupier in Leeds and thence to World Barista Champion. And we’ll also try to draw out some of the similarities between craft chocolate and specialty coffee.

Note: demand for this tasting has been very high, and unfortunately for this box we’ve not been able to source more of one of the bars; so this pack now contains 5 rather than 6 bars (and the price is now £24.95). The remaining bars are the same (and delicious)

    Says James:

‘I’m drawn to chocolate, in many ways, because of its similarities to great coffee. To me chocolate is effortless enjoyable, chemically satisfying, but when I dig a little deeper, it becomes fascinating and even more delightful. There’s a question that drives many people who work in food, or become interested in it… This is a question I ask whenever I’m eating or drinking something delicious. Why does this taste so good?
