Virtual Chocolate Tasting with Philipp Kauffmann

Philipp Kauffmann is one of the great heroes of the Craft Chocolate Revolution. Born in Munich, he left home at eighteen to tramp and travel the world before returning to study Anthropology and Development Economics in Munich and at SOAS (part of London University), where he also wrote a book on Jazz. He then started an internet company in Amsterdam (well before the dot com boom and bust) before stepping into a seven generations family tradition of environmental action. Mentors like primatologist Jane Goodall and ecopreneur Paul Hawken got him on the way. He moved to work for the WWF and the UN and after years in the field, determined that the cacao tree and chocolate industry held the perfect promise for growing an exemplary regenerative business. Now he runs Original Beans — who not only craft amazing beans (and cooking chocolate) but also increasingly sell beans to other makers.
Philipp has selected eight very different bars to tell the story of his life and journey. We’ll start with one of his Bavarian neighbours – Zotter, before following his travels to India. Then we will explore Original Beans’ history from Virunga to Piura, and also try interpretations of Original Beans’ Chuncho cacao from Standout (Sweden) and Georgia Ramon (Germany) whilst exploring the disciplines of growing a regenerative business beyond organic and fair trade. Philipp also has some intriguing views on the challenges craft chocolate faces versus mass produced confectionery, and why we need to be wary of the “bliss point” and sugar’s addictive properties.
