About the bar

This dark 75% bar from Bonnat is a tribute to a group of Japanese women divers, without whom this chocolate would not exist.

In 1609, a ship sailing between Mexico and Spain, via the Philippines, was thrown onto the coast of Japan during a storm. In the midst of shipwreck, a group of women fishermen saved the crew and then the cargo, some of which was cocoa. Unaware that they were dealing with women making a living from diving, the sailors became convinced that they had been hauled to shore by mermaids. The ship and its crew then set sail again towards the Philippines, where the cocoa beans were planted.

About the maker

The Bonnat family have been making chocolate in Voiron, France for over 130 years. It was current head Stephane Bonnat’s parents, Raymond and Nicole Bonnat who pioneered Bonnat’s first single origin bars in the 1980’s. Stephane has continued his parent’s tradition and the company now works with 35 different plantations worldwide to produce their bars.
