Inside the simple blue wrapper of Duffy’s Honduras Indio Rojo lies a jewel. The deep, glossy finish and clean ‘snap’ when you break a piece are signs of a truly great chocolate maker.

Created by Duffy Sheardown, one of only a handful of artisan chocolate makers in the UK, the chocolate has a full bodied and intense flavour with a fruity edge.

This chocolate was awarded the “Golden Bean” award for the best bean to bar dark chocolate in the world at the 2011 Academy of Chocolate Awards. It has since gone on to win other awards, including a silver medal in this year’s European round of the International Chocolate Awards. It remains one of our all time favourite dark chocolates, and a bar we think everyone should try.

    For me it is flat. It is a lot like the Rio Dulce. A bit of powdery grit, a bit of Carmel, a lot of acidity. The sunflower Lecithin over powers all of his bars for me. It’s a shame. I know it is an award winners but this doesn’t work for me.

    I love the presentation of this chocolate although not having it scored into segments does rather lead to a little over-indulgence. It does have that pleasing “snap” to it which I’ve learnt means a truly good chocolate. It’s hard for me to identify individual flavours but it’s overall taste leaves me thinking of honey. Truly up there with the best I’ve tasted.

    I enjoyed this. I can’t tell you about tasting notes or whatever because I am as rubbish at tasting chocolate as I am wine – I only know whether or not I like them. I am struggling with some of the darker Cocoa Runners bars but this one was nice.
