    You might not think of the seaside town of Cleethorpes in Lincolnshire as a centre of chocolate excellence, but that’s exactly where chocolate maker Duffy Sheardown produces his award winning range of bars.

    This is a sweet and nutty 72% dark chocolate made with Ecuadorian cocoa beans. It has a smooth texture, and is sweet for a 72% chocolate, with a nutty flavour and subtle orange blossom notes.

    Duffy sources the cocoa beans for his chocolate directly from cocoa farmers and co-operatives, ensuring a higher price for the farmer and a better quality product. The beans used in this bar are the the Ecuadorian ‘Nacional’ variety. These are grown by the Camino Verde project, in Balao canton of Guayas province. Located below the Guayas river, the biodiverse region has a long history of growing cacao.

      A little coarser on the palate than I was expecting, but certainly not what you'd call rough or gritty. Very pleasant flavour.

      Floral and sweet is right. And nutty too. The chocolate isn't as deep as I'd like, but at least it isn't as sweet as I had feared. :) Now don't get me wrong, it is quite sweet indeed, but it tastes more like the chocolate itself is sweet, rather than the usual overwhelming sugary sweetness. If the chocolate had simply had a deeper more rich chocolatey taste as well, then this would have gotten a much higher score from me.

      Very pleasant and smooth. Mild considering it's high cocoa content.
