About the bar
This deliciously dark 80% bar is a little wild! A sensationally fruity chocolate that packs a little more punch than Menakao’s 72%, for those who like their flavours just a little more intense. The high citrus notes here sharpen the natural fruitiness and acidity which make Madagascan cocoa beans so famously adored. Enjoy one square at a time and savour every last subtle flavour of this bar…
About the maker
This bar doesn’t just taste good, it does good. Madagascan chocolate maker Menakao proudly crafts its chocolate on the island, using only local ingredients. Unfortunately, this is rare even for craft chocolate – it’s estimated that less than 5% of the world’s chocolate is produced in the same country the cocoa is grown. By making the chocolate in Madagascar in addition to growing the cacao on the island, Menakao generate about 4-5 times the benefit of Fair Trade for the local Madagascan economy.
In honour of the men and women of Madagascar of all ethnicities who are at the heart of Menakao chocolate, Menakao decided that the bars should proudly bear the image “not [of] the face of Madagascar, but [of] Madagascan faces.” The beautiful image on the wrapping of this bar is of a Tanala man. The Tanala people, (Tanala meaning “forest-dwellers”), originate in the heavily forested south east of the island, between the highlands of the Antemoro and the coast. The bounty of the forest provides the Tanala with all they need to live, from hunting to the medicinal benefits of limitless plant species, from wild honey to coffee and rice cultivation.

This bar has a lovely sourness to it with immediate tastes of berries, sherbet and maybe even balsamic vinegar and a hint of Marmite?! Sounds crazy but it’s absolutely delicious and yes the bar does have a pleasing snap to it.

It has the fruity acidity of a Madagascar Bar that is in balance with the other flavors. I am not sure if I taste barley, or rye or grass, maybe it is treacle. Acidic and earthy. Not my favorite bar but it is OK.

Really intense fresh citrus flavour as soon as the bar melts. Slight undertone of cider, it’s almost sour but still pleasant. Really lovely, perfect example of a Malagasy chocolate! Also very smooth texture which snaps beautifully.

If you ever had a Malagasy chocolate and enjoyed it, Menakao perfectly follows the cookbook — tastes of spices, grapefruit, roasted nuts and a bitter aftertaste. The texture was the best amongst the four options this month — suave, but cracking!
