Dormouse – Uganda Dark 70%

This special limited edition bar was created by Isobel at Dormouse in response to strict laws targeting LGBTQ people in Uganda. The Anti-Homosexuality Act of 2023 violates the human rights of LGTBQ people, and criminalises any organisations which work to support them. You can read the latest on Rainbow Railroad’s website here.  Profits from sales of the bar, both via Cocoa Runners and Dormouse, will be donated to Rainbow Railroad, which supports those fleeing violence and oppression and helps them get to safety.

The beans

The beans are sourced from a cooperative in the Bundibugyo region of western Uganda. The farmers grow their cacao with plantains, banana, vanilla, and other crops under the canopy of the tropical rainforest of Rwenzori Mountains. This agroforestry system creates a natural buffer zone to protect the forests.

About the maker

Manchester’s first bean to bar chocolate maker, Dormouse Chocolates, started producing its very first batches in Isobel’s home kitchen in December 2014. Isobel Carse, founder of Dormouse Chocolates, started her craft chocolate journey as a professional chocolatier with a budding drive to make bean to bar chocolate. Inevitably, Dormouse Chocolates outgrew its small kitchen space, and moved its operations to its own small-scale chocolate factory – today, Karen, Isobel’s partner, occasionally helps with washing up duty.
