Rich and mesmerising, the cocoa beans growing on the Solomon Islands are deep and complex, with tasting notes of liquorice and bourbon vanilla ice cream. The texture is smooth with the creamiest mouthfeel.

About the maker

Firetree’s founders, David Zulman and Martyn O’Dare, have a wealth of chocolate expertise and passion. David ran a large confectionery business in his native South Africa before coming to the UK.   And Martyn spent many years setting up factories all over the world for both Cargill and Cocoa Barry (and most recently a new craft chocolate factory set for launch in Madagascar).  Back in 2017 they joined forces and determined to create a unique small batch, single estate craft chocolate company in the UK.

The beans

The island of Guadalcanal, nestled in the heart of the Solomon Islands, is home to some of the finest cocoa from this region. Honiara is the Capital of the Solomon Islands and main port for all exports, including cocoa, coconut, and tuna. The cocoa trees grow in this rich volcanic soil, protected from the midday sun beneath high coconut palms.

The Guadalcanal cocoa farmers that Firetree use are based along the North coast of the island, not too far from the historical Henderson airport. As education is mandatory on all the islands we buy from, after school, all the children are seen playing around the fermentation boxes and cocoa boxes. Their main farmer has four sisters and a wife that help maintain the farm.
