This smooth, dark 70% bar is made from beans harvested by Ben Smith, who has planted 800 cacao trees in the Kahalu’u Valley, Hawai’i.

  • About the bar

    In Hawaiian, the word Kahalu’u means “diving place” or “dripping trough” – the steep Ko’olau mountain range cradles the shallow waters of Kāneʻohe bay, making for excellent year-round diving, fishing, and farming, where the cocoa beans used for this bar are grown.

    The bar is smooth, dark, and fruity, with notes of bananas, roasted peanuts, and blueberries.

    About the maker

    Manoa was founded by Dylan Butterbaugh and Daniel O’Doherty. The pair use a variety of different locally sourced ingredients in their bars, which they craft in Kailua on Oahu island. All of Manoa’s bars are sourced from local farmers in Hamakua, Waiahole, Maunawili and Haiku. Hawaii is the only American state where cacao is grown.

    The beans

    The beans for this bar are harvested and grown by Ben Field in Kahalu’u Valley. Born and raised in Kahalu’u, Ben is following in the footsteps of three generations of plant cultivation. On his family land, he has planted approximately 800 cacao trees – his family also grows bananas, tumeric, taro, breadfruit, ginger, sapote, and grapefruit.
