This bar has been crafted in Madagascar from Madagascan cocoa and nothing else. The trick with 100% cacao chocolate is to break off a small piece and just let is melt on your tongue. As this bar melts, it coats your mouth. It is one of the more approachable 100% Madagascan bars, with its smooth texture giving it a particularly even melt. It has many of the jammy notes that are so typical of Madagascan cacao, with a roasted finish.

MIA stands for ‘Made in Africa’, an acronym that neatly sums up everything this maker stands for. The team behind MIA believes that there is truly exceptional food and drink being crafted in Africa from locally sourced ingredients. The team also believes in making delicious and unique food fairly, and that the food is produced in such a way as to give greater benefit back to the communities from which it comes, and which feels as good as it tastes. Madagascar has a rich heritage of cacao growing, and an ever increasing number of artisans are choosing to make cacao on the island too. Bars made on Madagascar are routinely named amongst the best in the world, and so the arrival of MIA’s single origin chocolate bars had us particularly excited.

Really good and beautiful. The thought when the chocolate is first plucked in your mouth is, wow this is a tasty chocolate. But then the taste begins to grow and strengthen, taking you along for the ride. Overall, I really enjoyed this bar and found it to be a quite unique.

My partner gets raspberries from this and I get.. marmite on buttered toast. Not a bad thing in itself but not for me when I want to eat chocolate!

Oh dear. This one is not for me. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the bar itself. It has a nice creamy texture and an interesting spicy note comes through, but the over-arching flavour profile right from the beginning for me is English breakfast tea, which I hate. I think I have some kind of sensitivity to a particular compound and I can taste it in a few things (sometimes in aubergines for example) that other people cannot. It’s the only explanation I have for why occasionally I can taste it in completely unrelated foods. I don’t want to put others off it (and most people love English breakfast tea anyway!), but this is to remind me that this particular 100% bar is definitely not for me. Normally I love Madagascan 100% chocolate.
