Description
TASTING NOTES
This rich and sweet dark bar is deeply chocolatey, with the unique flavour of morello cherries and hints of black tea combining to produce a special earthiness. The depth of flavour comes from the rare Amelonado cacao that grows in the Virunga National Park, home to some of the world’s last remaining mountain gorillas.
ABOUT THE MAKER
Original Beans was founded in 2008 by Philipp Kauffmann, a former conservationist at the World Wildlife Fund and the United Nations, to be a regenerative chocolate making company that focuses on protecting farmers, the rainforest, and thousands of endangered species. Their One Bar : One Tree programme promises that a tree is planted every time an Original Beans bar is sold, which can be tracked on their website with a special code on the back of the packet.
But don’t just take our word for it! Have a look at what the attendees at one of our recent Virtual Tastings had to say about it:

Aroma: chocolatey.
Melt: satin
Flavour: initially, predominant cinnamon but with other spices as well(like a cinnamon-containing spice blend). Then a dark cherry flavour comes in with an earthy, tea flavour underneath. Aftertaste is earthy and tea like.
An interesting mix of flavours but unfortunately, not suited to my personal preferences- hence the 3 stars. I would’ve given it 4 had I enjoyed the flavours more.

Initially it seems sweet and melts well. At this point flavours of earthiness, smoke, and black tea kick in, leaving a slight acidity nearer the end to balance the initial sweetness. The oscillation of the different notes makes it interesting. Good value for such a vibrant 70% dark chocolate.

I love love love this. It is all those words up there. It melts in the mouth to reveal new flavours as it goes on. My favourite from Cocoa Runners so far.
I have to say that I have a softness in my heart for the Virunga region as I have been there and shot (camera) gorillas. The taste takes me back to he mountain and that especial region.

Nice, relatively simple tasting chocolate bar. Enjoy eating it and will buy it again, for £3.95 it’s great value but not one I’d absolutely rave about.

This was probably our favourite chocolate from the CR tasting event. Finely balanced, smooth and with interesting flavours that reveal themselves gradually.

Pleasant cherry flavour as noted on the box
Soft and creamy on the palate
A great introduction for my first bar from Cocoa Runners

I absolutely love this chocolate and I am not a huge chocolate fan.

We’ve been rating our bars on our regular deliveries for the past 6 months now, this bar scored a respectable 8/10. This may sound slightly odd, seeing as it’s a bar of chocolate, but this is very chocolatey, but perhaps lacks the depth and after taste to take it to the next level and become king of the bars.

Wonderfully smooth with a slightly more bitter aftertaste but not unpleasant

I never thought I would enjoy a milk chocolate bar this much! Rich, dark, yet also creamy.

The best milk chocolate I’ve tried – the intensity of plain chocolate with an incredibly luxurious creamy, milk finish.

Wonderful up front flavour with cherry the first flavour on your tongue. Deep chocolate flavours, but let down by a nasty bitter after taste.

My favourite Original Beans bar. Intensely chocolates with strong cherry tones and hints of walnut with a smoky aroma. Breaks with a great snap and tastes even better.
