To bring us into the New Year, we’ve put together a box which encompasses worldwide traditions and gives a varied selection of some of this past year’s favourites.
Included in this box:
Willie’s Milk of the Gods
In Rome, before the christian era, New Years was dedicated to Janus, the god of gateways and beginnings. This deity was also credited for the naming of the month January.
Omnom Spiced White & Caramel
Welcoming us into the frosty new year, this winter bar encapsulates the seasonal shift.
Zotter – Madagascar 75% Dark
Much like the popular explosive celebrations, this 75% dark bar is a veritable firework of flavours, with a multi-layered fruity bouquet and notes of caramel and sweet spices.
Taza Cinnamon
The germanic New Year’s eve might be known as Sylvesterabend, named after Saint Sylvester. But in Austria and Germany it’s still well and truly a night of celebration – and that includes wine. Party-goers enjoy red-wine punch, spiced with cinnamon to wave in the new year.
Zotter – handscooped, Almond Marzipan
In France the year’s final dessert of choice is the “Galette des rois” or “King Cake”, traditionally this desserts consists of puff pastry packed with a sweet almond filling. Inspired by this, we have added Zotter’s Marzipan bar, to mirror this royal taste!
Zotter – handscooped, White Wine
In Spain, most of the population will have their mouths stuffed with grapes by the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve. The tradition of eating 12 grapes to welcome in the New Year is widely practiced. Unfortunately we don’t have grapes on offer, but we do however have Zotter’s handscooped white wine bar.
This bar is made using Muscaris grapes, which are pressed at the renowned Silberberg School of Viticulture, before being mixed into a white chocolate ganache with caramel, grappa, and verjus, and sprinkled with some boozy wine-soaked raisins. Finally it’s coated in 40% milk chocolate.
FireTree – Mindanao Island, Philippines
Up in the highlands, one celebration carried out in hope of bringing good luck to the coming year are bonfire ceremonies. These fiery festivals see scotsman parading and brandishing giant fireballs – representative of the sun and purification. As a nod to this tradition, we’ve included one of FireTree’s dark chocolate bars!
Pump Street Kitchen – Jamaica 75% (taster bar)
This dark chocolate bar from Pump Street Bakery is a buttery bar with a smooth, indulgent melt. Rum and raisin is mixed with a touch of caramel and brown sugar giving a rich and decadent aroma.
The notes of this bar are reminiscent of the dutch New Year favourite, oliebollen, these are doughtnut-like balls packed with raisins and served at fairs on the 31st of December!
Akessons Brazil 55% Milk Chocolate
Finally, one of the world’s more wacky New Year traditions can be found in Brazil! – Locals will make sure they’re wearing their “lucky underwear” on New Year’s Eve to safeguard them for the following year, the most popular colour is red, especially for those looking for love and yellow is also a common choice; thought to bring money!
This Akesson’s bar, produced in Brazil is packaged in red and yellow – and we hope it might bring you good fortune for 2022!
