To help you get excited for Eurovision 2023, we’ve partnered with celebrated columnist and Chocolate Correspondent for The Observer, Annalisa Barbieri, to put together this Eurovision craft chocolate box with five different bars, representing six of the different countries competing this year.
Putting out our first Eurovision box in 2023 is especially fitting, as the song competition that’s been going for nearly 70 years is being held this year in Liverpool on behalf of Ukraine.
Once you’ve tried the bars, don’t forget to vote for your favourites here!Â
Table – PISA, Haiti Dark Milk 61%
“A very accomplished milk, which is comfortingly old fashioned and very creamy (milk is the second ingredient).” – Annalisa
To represent the United Kingdom, we’ve selected this fantastic dark milk bar by Table. As the Grand Final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 is taking place in the Liverpool Arena, we couldn’t have selected a more fitting maker! Table was founded in late 2021 as Liverpool’s first bean-to-bar chocolate maker, and is the brainchild of three extraordinary people – entrepreneur and pastry chef Tian, graphic designer (turned chef) Remy, and marketing magician Andrea.
Stranger – Kokoa Kamili, Tanzania 70% Dark
“One of the best darks I’ve tasted: complex, strong and dark yet at the same time smooth and creamy.” – Annalisa
To represent the winners of last years Eurovision, Ukraine, we’ve selected this wonderfully smooth and creamy Tanzanian bar by Stranger. Born from a true passion to transform the Ukrainian chocolate industry, Stranger Chocolate was founded in late 2016 by designers Ruslan and Tetyana. Although Stranger has already racked up two Silver Awards and two Bronze Awards in the International Chocolate Awards 2021-22, what really makes them stand out is their sheer strength and endurance – Ruslan and Tetyana are still making chocolate in Ukraine with the help of their children, Anya and Matvii, despite the war knocking on their front doorstep.
Puchero – Nicaragua, Milk 38% with Churros
“Possibly my favourite bar in the box. It’s sweet, comforting and milky, with a tangible sprinkling of sugar. Made to represent the classic Spanish treat of hot chocolate and churros.” – Annalisa
To represent both Spain and Italy, we’ve selected this tasty inclusions bar by Puchero. Puchero was established in 2015 by husband and wife; Italian-born Marco and Paloma. Inspired by travelling around South East Asia, they started out in the world of speciality coffee, roasting single-origin brews. After 3 years they moved into craft chocolate, mastering roasting, grinding, concheing and tempering techniques to produce a selection of delicious craft chocolate bars.Â
Bonnat – Morenita, Mexico, Dark Milk 65%
“The glorious wrapper gives this a ‘tuck box’ feel and the chocolate is chunky, solid and substantial with a smooth, slow melt.” – Annalisa
To represent France, we’ve chosen this smooth and creamy dark milk by Bonnat. The Bonnat family has been making chocolate in Voiron, France for over 130 years. It was current head Stephane Bonnat’s parents, Raymond and Nicole Bonnat who pioneered Bonnat’s first single origin bars in the 1980’s. Stephane has continued his parent’s tradition and the company now works with 35 different plantations worldwide to produce their bars.
Georgia Ramon – Carolina Reaper Chili Dark Chocolate
“I have become slightly addicted to this; gorgeous chocolate but with blow your sinuses out chili. Perhaps leave this bar til last.” – Annalisa
Finally, to represent Germany, we’ve selected this unique inclusion dark chocolate bar by Georgia Ramon. German maker Georgia Ramon is the brain-child of Georg Bernadini and his partner Ramon. Georg is a well-known figure in the chocolate world. After training and working as a chef patissier in Germany and Paris, he helped found Confiserie Coppeneur et Compagnon alongside Oliver Coppeneur.Â
