Vegan chocolate

Every maker in our collection is sourced and selected because their chocolate not only tastes great, but they go beyond. Working directly with farmers and cooperatives ensures fair practices, processes, and pay for the people who grow cacao. But it also means that ethical and sustainable chocolate making is business-as-usual. Most of the chocolate in our library is suitable for vegans; most dark chocolate is simply the combination of cocoa and sugar; two plant ingredients. But even milk chocolate can be vegan: We have a collection of some of the finest plant-based “milk” chocolate bars in the world. You can find all of this below.

Which alternative “milks” are used in craft milk chocolate bars?

  • Coconut milk

One of the more commonly used plant-based milks, coconut milk is a flavoursome addition to the profiles of craft chocolate bars. And in many parts of the world, coconut trees are event grown alongside cacao trees; a partnership from farm to bar!

  • Almond milk

'Nuttiness' is an often welcome part of a milk chocolate's flavour profile, and almond milk tends to bring this along with its own soft sweetness.

  • Oat milk

The malty flavours of oat milks bring a richness and depth to milk chocolates. Bars crafted with oat milk tend to have very luxurious melts.

  • Buckwheat

This up-and-comer 'alternative milk' isn't found in many chocolates, but expect to see it become increasingly popular. Buckwheat is an amazing gluten-free grain, and can be used to create dairy-like flavours in vegan milk chocolates.

Milk, mylk, m!lk, or milq?

Naming plant-based milk chocolates isn’t easy! Plenty of different milks can be used to craft the world’s best chocolate, but what to call them can be challenging. To say nothing of the legal requirements of food labelling (of which there is plenty to say!), it can be confusing for vegan consumers to make the right choices. Many craft chocolate makers have a preferred name for their alternative milks, to make it clear that their bars are distinct from those made with cow (or other livestock) milks.
