Description
Established in 2015 by small-scale Brazillian farmers in the city of Altamira, Pará, the Cooperativa Central de Producao Organica Da Transamazonica e Xingu (CEPOTX) can be found near in the city of Altamira, Pará. At 150 members strong, the cooperative is part of the Organic Production Program, which aims to improve income for farming families and establish sustainable relationships with family farmers based on organic management. This has a direct impact on Amazonian forest conservation, as the negative impact of agriculture on the forest is reduced while the sustainability of agricultural families is increased. In total, the Organic Production Program involves 5 cooperatives in the state, improving the quality of members lives without having to leave their properties to find new areas to deforest. In addition to cocoa, the members also produce organic cupuaçu, açaí, pepper and coffee – still on a small scale.
