Description
SUMAQAO was founded in March 2012 in Piura, Peru, as MINKA SCS AG’s first cocoa sourcing company. Created by Swedes Stefan Block and Paul Schönenberger, MINKA SCS was founded from a passion to positively impact the social, economic, and environmental aspects of cocoa cultivation and exportation. SUMAQAO, which stems from the Quechua word SUMAQ meaning ‘outstanding’, organises a network of around 4,000 farmers from all cocoa producing regions in Peru. They have local buying stations in each of the regions where they collect cocoa from individual farmers or members of cooperatives. In addition to focusing on sustainability, SUMAQAO also pride themselves on improving farmer’s incomes, providing teaching support to cocoa farmers from their field staff, eliminating any form of forced labour or discrimination, and ensuring the cocoa which they purchase does not originate from protected or illegally deforested areas.
