Description

Founded in 2007, the Cooperar cooperative consists of nearly 300 individuals distributed in 51 communities along 800km of the Purus River Valley, including caboclos, ribeirinhos and native people. The cacao represents an alternative for expanding the sources of income for those people, strengthening at the same time the importance of maintaining the forest patrimony. As the members have grown up on the lip of the Amazon Rainforest, the cooperative counts on sustainable management technology to produce cacao while still prioritising sustainability and respecting the environment. In the case of Cooperar, the entire production chain, from harvesting to processing, received training to increase cacao productivity; since implemented, the cooperative has registered a leap in annual wild cocoa from 4 tons to 12 tons, generating work and income for 24 families.

Farming notes: The cacao is wildly grown in the Amazon Forest. It is not planted or farmed the way man does. It grows where nature made it appear, in the shade of ancient trees and in the floodplains of the rivers, near river communities that are encouraged to maintain and protect the biodiversity of the rainforest. This way, work opportunities are created, providing new income sources for men and women and improving quality of life. The characteristics of the cacao may be different every year, according to how they are harvested.

Fermentation and drying notes: Coming soon.
