Description
The Federation of Cooperatives of Las Verapaces (FEDECOVERA), based in the municipality of Cobán in northern Guatemala, was originally founded in February 1976 as a second-tier cooperative organisation. FEDECOVERA was established to bring together other first-tier cooperatives and non-cooperative producer organisations as an umbrella processing and marketing agency. Importantly, the unified collective is made of of cooperatives who join voluntarily, with a shared objective of focusing on the livelihood of the farmers and improving biodiversity. With the vast majority of its members belonging to the Q’eqchi and Poqomchi Mayan ethnic groups, FEDECOVERA employs over 25,000 producing families gathered in 42 cooperatives and 12 associations; taking care of more than 140,000 people. In addition to growing rare Criollo-dominant cacao, the cooperative also produces a variety of different products, including cardamom, allspice, coffee, tea, essential oils, and basic grains.
