About 20° Nord 20° Sud

The name 20°Nord 20°Sud represents the latitudes either side of the equator, where cocoa absolutely thrives. Mélanie, the founder of 20° Nord 20° Sud, did this with the origins in mind, to make sure that whoever was tasting her chocolate would wonder about the terroir the cocoa in the bar was grown in. Their packaging is made of 100% cellulose and is completely recyclable, and the GPS coordinates of the cooperative or plantation from which the cocoa is sourced is placed on the front. Today, 20° Nord 20° Sud are a team of 6 chocolate enthusiasts who produce their wonderful bars at their factory in Vendée, located on the French west coast.

How they became makers…

We find it hard to believe that a few years ago, Mélanie Paulau had absolutely no interest in chocolate – she found it too fatty, and too sweet. That was, until, Mélanie visited Salon du Chocolat in Paris – a bean to bar festival packed full of craft chocolate makers from all around the world. For the first time, Mélanie felt as if she was eating real chocolate which bore real values. Since then, chocolate has been a big part of Mélanie’s life. After training with experienced chocolatiers and Chloé Doutre Roussel, Mélanie founded 20° Nord 20° Sud in 2021 to share her passion with the rest of the world.

20 Nord 20 Sud’s Sourcing

20 Nord 20 Sud work directly with cocoa farmers because they want the farmers to be invested in a local sustainable economy, alongside the high quality of the cocoa. 20 Nord 20 Sud believe that the impact on cocoa farmers must be direct, and not under the cover of a supposedly ethical brand – to quote Mélanie herself, “farmers must be properly supported to be able to provide all the transparency of the chain, and have a decent fixed remuneration proportional to the work carried out”.
