About Maüa

5 men and women dressed in black pose in a silly way in front of an all glass shop window, with chocolates inside

Maüa was born in April 2020, from the love between Silvia Sánchez and Jaume Martorell Mir. The name ‘Maüa’ actually comes from a fusion of two very different origins – the ‘Ma-‘ of Maüa is taken from Mallorca, where Jaume is from, and the ‘-ua’ has been taken from Nicaragua, where Silvia is from. And it’s not just the name that demonstrates Silvia and Jaume’s roots – Maüa’s packaging (designed by Xisco Barceló, a recognized designer in Mallorca) is a mix between the traditional fabrics from Mallorca and indigenous fabrics from Nicaragua. Today, the pair are based in Mallorca, working alongside 6 employees as the very first bean-to-bar makers on the island.

How they became makers…

Silvia has always had a love for all things chocolate. Silvia was born in Nicaragua, the cradle of Mesoamerica, where cocoa has a long-standing history. When she was a child, she would help her mother and grandmother to make a traditional cocoa drink, where cocoa is combined with corn, cloves, peppers, and cinnamon – the cocoa that the family used to make these drinks was sourced from the trees planted on her grandfathers farm, making it all the more special. These childhood memories drew Silvia to start working in the chocolate world, and today, she handles the development of chocolates for Maüa.

Jaume, on the other hand, became interested in cocoa after moving to Nicaragua in 2008. Jaume began spending more and more time visiting cocoa-growing cooperatives in the northern part of the country – as an agronomist, he became interested in the development of cocoa, and soon started working for different organisations to visit and advise cocoa farms throughout Latin America. Today, Jaume supports the development of new recipes for Maüa, and hosts Maüa’s very own chocolate tastings.

Maüa’s Sourcing

Maüa source their beans from a variety of different cooperatives and origins – with Jaume’s 14 years of experience working in the cocoa sector in Latin America, the pair only use beans which they know are transparently traded, ethically sound, and of good quality. As part of their mission, Jaume and Silvia always make a point to visit the farms and taste the beans at origin, before making the decision to use them.
